REACH Study
The goal of the project is to understand how North Carolina adolescents’ experiences with and use of technology, including social media and AI, affect their health and well-being, including sleep and mental health.
About
Project REACH is a collaboration between researchers at Duke University (Dr. Rick Hoyle, Dr. Erin Davisson) and the University of California, Irvine (Dr. Candice Odgers, Dr. Kelli Dickerson). Our project coordinator at Duke University is Daniela (Dani) Tejada. The goal of the project is to understand how North Carolina adolescents’ experiences with and use of technology, including social media and AI, affect their health and well-being, including sleep and mental health. We are also interested in understanding the impacts of technology use on learning outcomes, like grades.
Frequently Asked Questions
The REACH Study is a follow-up study to the PACE Study, an online survey your child completed during the summer of 2025. Many of the questions are similar to the ones your child answered in that study. Your child’s responses from that study will be connected to the responses they provide in the REACH Study.
The consent you provide today is valid for just this youth survey. We may contact you to ask if your child may participate in additional follow-up studies, including a study later this year that involves answering questions several times a day using an app that can be installed on a smartphone or tablet. Until your child is 18 years old, we will always contact you first to provide your consent for them to participate.
Participants who complete the REACH Study will receive a $20 Amazon gift card emailed to the email address of your choice. Please note that gift cards are sent between 24-72 hours after study completion and may not be sent out over weekends. If you have trouble finding your gift card, please be sure to check your spam and promotions folders.
Adolescents who completed the previous PACE Study and whose caregiver agreed to be contacted for future studies are eligible to complete the REACH Study. Siblings are not eligible to complete the REACH Study at this time. The name in the recruitment email you receive is the child who is eligible to participate.
There is no parent study at this time; however, we anticipate future parent studies and will contact you when those opportunities become available.
